The congregation’s story began in 1876, when German immigrants who had settled in Petersburg, Michigan, founded St. Peter Lutheran Church on Center Street. What began as a small community of faithful believers has grown and endured through a century and a half of changing times, faithfully carrying its Lutheran heritage from one generation to the next.
Throughout its history, St. Peter has been served by 13 called pastors, along with interim pastors who have guided the congregation during times of transition. The church has seen the construction of a parsonage, a parochial school, and two church buildings, with each building undergoing additions.
The church building constructed in 1926 continues to stand today, nearly a century after its doors first opened. Over the years, the building has been expanded to include a West Wing and a large Fellowship Hall, providing space not only for worship but also for fellowship, ministry, and service to the community.
On Sunday, August 30, the current congregation gathered to celebrate this remarkable milestone of 150 years of St. Peter Lutheran Church serving God and the people of Petersburg. Approximately 130 people attended the anniversary worship service and catered dinner, making the occasion a joyful celebration of the church’s past, present, and future. Among those in attendance were former pastors Tom Moyer (1989-1995) and Gene Koessel (1981 to 1988), as well as interim pastors John Schinkel and Curtis Garland. Their presence served as a meaningful reminder of the many pastors and leaders who have shared in St. Peter’s ministry throughout its long history. Also joining the celebration were Kevin Richards, mayor of Petersburg, and Michigan State Representative William Bruck.
For a congregation to celebrate 150 years is more than simply marking the passage of time. It is a celebration of the countless individuals and families whose lives have been touched by St. Peter Lutheran Church; of generations who gathered together in worship; of children taught the faith; of pastors who faithfully served; and of a congregation that continued to open its doors through seasons of both challenge and joy.
Congratulations to St. Peter Lutheran Church on 150 years of continued faith, fellowship, and service to the Petersburg community!
